UNIT 01
Analog Ammeters and Voltmeters
Classification; deflecting, control and damping torques; PMMC, moving iron type and electrostatic instruments: construction, torque equation, range extension; Errors and compensations; advantages and disadvantages; Instrument transformers: CT and PT theory, ratio and phase angle errors; numerical problems
UNIT 02
Analog Wattmeters and Power Factor Meters
Electrodynamometer type wattmeter (LPF and UPF); Power factor meters: dynamometer and MI type (single and three phase), construction and torque equation; Potentiometers: DC Crompton's potentiometer, standardization and applications; AC potentiometer (polar and coordinate types), standardization and applications; numerical problems
UNIT 03
Measurement of Electrical Parameters
DC bridges: Wheatstone's bridge (medium resistance), Kelvin's double bridge (low resistance); Loss of charge method (high resistance), Megger, measurement of earth resistance; AC bridges for inductance and Q: Maxwell's, Hay's and Anderson's bridges; AC bridges for capacitance and loss angle: De Sauty's, Schering and Wien's bridges; numerical problems
UNIT 04
Transducers
Definition and classification; Resistive, inductive and capacitive transducers; LVDT; strain gauge; Thermistors, thermocouples, piezoelectric and photodiode transducers; Hall effect sensors; numerical problems
UNIT 05
Digital Meters
Digital voltmeters: successive approximation, ramp type and integrating type DVM; Digital frequency meter, digital multimeter, digital tachometer; Digital energy meter, Q meter; CRO: measurement of phase difference and frequency using Lissajous patterns; numerical problems
