Crystallization of metals; atomic packing factor - SC, BCC, FCC and HCP; Grain and grain boundaries and their effect on properties; determination of grain size; Necessity of alloying; types of solid solutions; Hume-Rothery's rules; intermediate alloy phases and electron compounds
UNIT 02
Equilibrium Diagrams
Construction of equilibrium diagrams; isomorphous alloy systems; equilibrium cooling and heating; lever rule; coring; Eutectic systems, peritectic reaction; Solid-state transformations: allotropy, eutectoid and peritectoid reactions, phase rule; Binary phase diagrams: Cu-Ni, Bi-Cd and Fe-Fe3C
UNIT 03
Ferrous & Non-ferrous Metals and Alloys
